Locally sourced lamb
Broadhay Farm nestles in the Hope Valley just on the edge of the village of Hathersage.
It has been home to the Bramall family for three generations and is where Andrew, the
farmer of this land, was himself born. He grew up working alongside his father and has
continued to work the land since leaving school, now with the growing help of his own
young son, William.
The farm provides lowland pasture as well as more rugged hillside grazing for the
sheep, where they are born and reared from late March onwards until they are hand
selected for their quality meat towards the late summertime and early autumn. All
of this is done with providing the best care for the animals, skilfully rearing them,
carefully selecting them and transporting them personally, before being prepared for
sale in the local butcher’s shop.
Not everyone can say they are personally involved in the rearing of their meat produce and know exactly where it is reared as well as sold, but this shows the relationship
between farmer and butcher, where care and quality are important to both sides of the
partnership!
As for the number of food miles the meat travels – you can just about see Broadhay Farm from the butcher’s shop and if you’re lucky, you might even see the farmer on his tractor!
